Digital transformation is a mindset as opposed to being a destination. It is an opportunity to rethink old operating models, and to integrate all digital technology in all areas of business.

A crucial aspect of digital transformation is to experiment but at the same time, be responsive to member’s needs.

In this article, we talk about how to prepare your organization for digital transformation and orchestrate a digital journey.

The insights in this article were shared by Benjamin Maxim, AVP Digital Strategy and Innovation, from Michigan State University FCU at the 6th Annual Virtual CULytics Summit, where he discussed digital innovation and fintech exploration at MSUFCU, Member experience, and digital transformation framework.

All you need to know about MSUFCU’s digital journey -

In MSUFCU’s transformation journey, digital ownership moved to IT. The UX team was created and scaled. To create a better member experience - Research and digital experience, digital strategy, and innovation, eServices were created as a separate digital trio.

INNOVATION - The lab at MSUFCU

The lab was launched in the fall of 2020, and it allows for “external members” to interact with the brand. The lab serves as a platform for further research and gains meaningful insights for products that are in the early stage of development. Technologies such as AI can be explored and functions such as promotions can be performed.

Innovation workshops - As part of the lab, employees from different teams are pulled together to create, test, and innovate new ideas.

Innovation strategies - The five strategies for innovation in the lab are -

  • Increase digital engagement.
  • Provide/improve human-digital interactions.
  • Improve digital as a service channel.
  • Improve operational efficiency.
  • Be responsive to emerging trends.

Innovation business process - Each idea is picked up, and put into an opportunity pipeline, scrutinized with due diligence, and piloted. The objective is to ensure the idea aligns with the value of the organization.

For ideas to move into the opportunity pipeline, a number of inputs like member feedback and surveys, industry trends and research, innovation business processes are taken into account.

The due diligence process also includes multiple stakeholders and departments who perform activities like worksheets, legal reviews, risk assessment, and more. The pilot process concludes with a decision to either end or scales the process.

Digital transformation framework

A few essential key points you should be mindful of including in your digital transformation journeys to build the right Leadership and culture to drive organizational readiness are as below-

  • Within your organization, address the fear of employees being replaced by bots and automation.
  • Focus on member experience and not just digital.
  • Improve operational efficiency.
  • As a leader, you should be able to embrace, drive change and cultivate an innovative mindset
